RECENT VIETNAMESE ARRIVALS IN HONG KONG: DETAILS OF THEIR ILLEGAL DEPARTURES AND OF ASSISTANCE RECEIVED IN CHINESE PORTS
We have just received the following details of five groups of Vietnamese arriving in Hong Kong. The total number of Vietnamse in these five groups is 231.
The
Group One. 110 Vietnamese Boat People (VBP) arrived in a boat on 19 April. The group left Hai Phong on 30 March and made five stops in China before arriving in Hong Kong. They were not given assistance by officials in Chinese ports. boatmaster said that on the day prior to their departure from Hai Phong he was visited by 2 (unidentified) SRV security officials at his place of work in Hai Phong. They demanded money in return for not exposing the illegal departure he was organising. The boatmaster paid them two taels of gold.
Group Two. 25 VBP arrived in a boat on 20 April. The group made several stops in China on their way to Hong Kong. They were given supplies by local officials at Bei Hai and Wu Chuan. Their original boat became unseaworthy at Wu Chuan and they purchased a motorised wooden junk from a local fisherman to continue their journey.
Group Three. 18 VBP/Ex-China Vietnamese Illegal Immigrants (ECVII) arrived in a boat on 21 April. The original group of 11 left Ho Chi Minh City by train to Hanoi on 2 April, and paid SRV border officials at Lang Sou 20,000 Dong each to cross the Sino-Vietnamese border. While in China, 4 other VBP and 3 ECVII joined the group. They travelled over-land from Guangxi to Don Mon in Guangdong Province where they brought a junk for 6,500 RMB for their journey to Hong Kong.
Group Four. A group of 25 VBP arrived on 21 April. They reached Bei Hai on 19 April where their boat became unseaworthy. They paid 0.5 tael of gold to join another boat which was passing through Bei Hai at the time. However, there was conflict between the 2 groups and they were put ashore at Xu Wen where they reported to the local authorities. They were kept in a detention centre until 25 March when they were transferred to Wai Lo. They were then given a motorised wooden junk, 172 litres of fuel, 100kg of rice and 10kg of vegetables free of charge to continue their journey to Hong Kong.
Group Five. 53 VBP arrived in a boat on 22 April. The main group of 48 crossed the Sino-Vietnamese land border on 17 March via Hai Hung after paying SRV border officials 50,000 Dong per person. 4 VBP left Vietnam by boat and picked up the main group and one illegal immigrant at Dong Xiang in China before continuing their journey to Hong kong.
