Vietnamese Refugees and Boat People
2.
All Districts reported continued interest in this subject.
There was strong support in most Districts to abolish the
Port of First Asylum Policy in Hong Kong. Respondents in
Wong Tai Sin noted that the British Government now seemed more
anxious to resolve this problem and wondered whether it was
due to pressure from the Chinese Government. Respondents in
Eastern believed that with more pressure on Britain from China,
who wished to see this problem resolved, Britain would make
more of an effort in persuading the Vietnamese Government to
co-operate in the repatriation programme.
3.
A number of District Board members in Tuen Mun suggested
that instead of Vietnamese officials travelling to interview
small numbers of refugees regarding voluntary repatriation,
arrangements should be made for a full time delegation to be
stationed in Hong Kong.
