note on Japan's contribution to the Vietnamese boat

1987 Japan was the second highest contributor to the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees worldwide
programme, giving US$57 million. (No figures are yet
available for 1988). The Japanese Government also gave
US$200,000 in response to UNHCR's appeal last year for
their programme to repatriate those who have asked to
return to Vietnam.

As far as resettlement is concerned, Japan has
accepted 5,922 Indo-Chinese refugees since 1975, of whom
some 4,251 were boat people. Of these, 270 came from
Hong Kong. In the years 1985 to 1988 the figures for
boat people from Hong Kong are 52, 5, 23 and 25.
