says that most of the students are motivated by patriotism and that the party and the students have a common goal to solve the problems of the nation.

About 30,000 students remain in the Square.

Gorbachev's visit to the Monument to the Martyrs of the Revolution in the Square cancelled.

ZHAO Ziyang tells Gorbachev that DENG is still our 'Party's leader' and the 'helmsman'.

ZHAO sends an sympathetic open letter to the students on behalf of the Standing Committee of the Portburo. He also asks the students to end the hunger strike.

17 students continue hunger strike. Many members of the public pay visits to the students and donate money.

HKFS call for boycott of classes by all tertiary institutions. Six institutions respond.
