Thank you for your letter of 19 June enclosing one from James McDonald about the alleged consumption of live monkey brains in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance makes acts of cruelty to animals illegal and provides powers to arrest offenders. The import and possession of endangered species including monkeys is subject to control. No licence has ever been issued to restaurants for the import and possession of monkeys for food and the Hong Kong Government have no knowledge of the consumption of live monkey brains in Hong Kong restaurants. Any reports of this would be investigated vigorously and those responsible would be punished.
I hope James McDonald will find this information reassuring.
Mark
you for raising this
