CITES

IS CITES DOING ENOUGH?

All parties to CITES are keen to see illegal trade in ivory

stamped out.

African elephant currently listed in Appendix II of Convention allowing trade if certain criteria are met.

Now clear that quotas and other controls imposed by CITES not

as effective as originally hoped. That is why many countries are now pressing for African elephant to be listed in Appendix I of Convention, which denote total ban on trade. This would bring CITES controls broadly into line with those of the EC.
