We have contributed £5000 per annum to the cost of running
the CITES Ivory Trade Monitoring Unit and have provided vehicles
and 3 expatriate staff to the Kenyan Wildlife Department.
Q5 Will the Government take action to stop the illegal ivory
trade in Hong Kong?

The Hong Kong Authorities share our concern about the plight
of the African elephant and have announced that they will support
the transfer of the species to Appendix I of CITES.

to cull the elephants in other to protect the habitat for the

A6 There are many complicated issues such as this one and they
will be discussed at the CITES Conference in October. We shall
listen to all the arguments carefully and play a full part in the
discussions. In the meantime, however, I am satisfied that
urgent action was needed to minimise the threa
while a long term stategy to ensure its fut
to the elephant
survival is worked
out.
