WORLDWIDE BAN ON IVORY SALES

The Japanese use 1 million signature chops carved from ivory per year.
This represents 2,500 elephants.
CITES and WWF Japan Ivory Statistics 1988 of ivory purchased by Japanese and Hong Kong traders:
(a) Raw ivory 110 tons at an average of 12 lbs
per tusk or 24 lbs per elephant.
This represents 9,167 elephants.
(b) worked ivory 30 tons at an average of
12 lbs per tusk or 24 lbs per elephant.
This represents 2,500 elephants.
Two sources who gave this information, which was used in the Cook Report are:
