Dear Mr Leung

DISPOSAL OF LIVE ENDANGERED SPECIES

Thank you for your letter of 7 November about the problems you encounter in relation to the disposal of live endangered species which come into your possession as a result of CITES enforcement work.

We

agree that the CITES Secretariat should be consulted and we should be happy to write to them on your behalf. Rather than simply ask them to issue a notification, however, we suggest that we should put your problem to them and seek their advice on the best way to overcome it. As you point out, other countries may be in the same position as you and the Secretariat would be best placed to decide whether a notification along the lines you suggest is the most effective solution.

If you agree with the above approach, I should be grateful if you would let me have more details about the nature and extent of your difficulties. For example, it would be useful to know with what proportion of Appendix 1 and Appendix 2 species you have to deal. I assume that the root of the problem lies in the fact that Hong Kong does not have many suitable institutions where the seized specimens can be sent.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

ttm
