Re: Application of CITES Import Permit
for Killer Whale
Thank you for your 12th November 1988 letter regarding our application for a Hong Kong CITES Permit to import a male killer whale from Japan. We regret that our· motivation has obviously been misunderstood and we would like to elaborate on the fact that our intention is definitely not in contradiction to the spirit of preservation and conservation of whales. Particularly, we would emphasize that operations at Ocean Park and the intentions of acquiring a killer whale have nothing in common with and are far remote from those of "Commercial Whaling" as mentioned in your letter.
In the past 5 years and for reasons explained later, we have felt there was a real need to acquire a mate for our existing female killer whale. Subsequently, in 1986, we located the only suitable and available male killer whale at Windsor Safari Park in United Kingdom. Unfortunately, the whale died while in captivity in England after a lengthy period taken to issue the perm't. As a result we are still unable to complete the mission we had embarked on 5 years previously. However, the United Kingdom CITES authority did issue a permit in September 1986, and their understanding
A and support of our intention must have been crucial
elements in their final decision. “VET VERONA GEN
