Killer Whale

Further to our letter of 22nd November 1988, it has come to our attention that the charter of the IWC may not include powers concerning cetaceans such as killer whales and dolphins. Some of our U.S.A. contacts have advised that the IWC has no jurisdiction over oceanarium exhibits of this kind.

In any case, as previously mentioned, Ocean Park believe that there has been a misunderstanding over importation of the whale in question. The whale is intended for conservation, breeding, education and exhibition purposes, rather than for commercial profit and consumption, which are the proper concerns of the IWC.

Ocean Park have been seeking a mate for our existing killer whale for many years, and another suitable male may not be available for years to come, or indeed ever at a cost Ocean Park can afford. This would be a great setback to our efforts to provide a mate for Hoi Wai and to initiate a breeding programme. Our consultants and other marine experts strongly feel that Hoi Wai should have a companion and that killer whales should be kept in pairs at a minimum.
