refer. Since May 1988 there has been an effective
European Community ban on all commercial imports of ivory
from 18 African countries where the elephant population
is no longer considered capable of sustaining commercial
exploitation. Furthermore, the European Commission has
announced its intention to introduce more restrictions on
the import of ivory. It has also allocated 500,000 ECU
(about £320,000) to a programme to be implemented by the
World Wide Fund for Nature which will provide assistance
for those African countries seeking to improve protection
of their elephant populations.
