Hong Kong has been under considerable international (including Parliamentary) and local pressure to amend the Schedules So as to introduce controls over worked ivory. Whilst it is unlikely that the additional restrictions or the increase in fees will attract much attention from the general public, the tighter control on import of ivory and other specimens will be welcomed by conservationists as well as legal traders.

A press release will be issued by the Director of Agriculture and Fisheries to announce the amendments. It will emphasize the necessity of tightening the import of ivory to Hong Kong in order to meet Hong Kong's international obligations and the adverse consequences if this were not implemented immediately.
