Completions of office premises in the private sector declined by 52% in terms of floor area in the first half of 1989. In the twelve months ending June 1989, completions were 47% less than in the preceding twelve months.

As regards other commercial premises

(mainly shops) in the private sector,

completions fell by 52% in terms of floor area in the first half of 1989. In the twelve months ending June 1989, completions were 37% less than in the preceding twelve months.

Completions of private sector

residential property decreased by 13% in terms. of number of units in the first half of 1989.

In the twelve months ending June 1989, completions decreased by 6% from the preceding

twelve months.

(d) Building consents

Following a decline of 13% in 1988, planned property developments, in terms of the total usable floor area on building plans for which consent to commence work was given,

continued to fall in the first half of 1989.

Consents for industrial, residential and commercial property declined by 28%, 5% and 2% respectively in the first half of this year, while consents for other types of property (such as hotels, cinemas and school buildings) rose by

58%. Overall, a decline of 7% in consents was

recorded (Table 5).
