De to Minty,
Thank you for your letter of 11 July to Mrs Chalker about press reports alleging that the Hong Kong police have tested South African riot control equipment.
The Hong Kong authorities have now investigated the matter. According to their information, only one shotgun from South Africa was ever tested. This was a result of an error on the part of the police and steps have been taken to ensure that this will not happen again. The import of all arms into Hong Kong is strictly controlled by law. No arms have been purchased from South Africa by the Hong Kong Government and no further testing of weapons will be carried out.
