Thank you for your letters dated 16 August 1989 and 15 September 1989, in reply to our original letter addressed to Mrs Chalker dated 11 July about the testing by the Hong Kong police of South African riot control equipment. We are also grateful for the earlier reply to the same letter sent by Mr. William Waldegrave dated 9 August 1989.

We are pleased that as a result of the investigations carried out by the Hong Kong authorities the error on the part of the police has been ascertained and that steps have been taken to ensure that this will not happen again.

We are still seriously concerned about how the South African riot equipment mentioned in the original press report was imported from South Africa into Hong Kong is in fact not covered by the existing Hong Kong regulations? It would assist us a great deal if you could kindly let us know what the situation is with regard to shotguns and other similar equipment, including anti-riot equipment, made in South Africa. Do the existing local laws prohibit such items from being imported into Hong Kong? We would also be interested to know whether such equipment as well as arms from South Africa are permitted to pass legally through Hong Kong to other destinations.

We should like to thank you for your kindness in sending us the relevant arms trade and other trade regulations of Hong Kong, but unfortunately some of the pages in the document are rather unclear and we are not in a position to establish whether they in fact cover such items. If that is the case we would welcome receiving your assurance.

Please forgive the delay in replying to your letter of 15 September 1989 which is partly due to the fact that it was posted to us by the British Embassy in Oslo on 3 October 1989.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sencerely,

Abdues. Muity
