AVIATION FUEL
7. Fuel Available.
8.
a.
Total storage capcity on the Island is:
RAF Storage 2,250m3 (airfield BFI).
US Storage - 9,099m (storage depot Catherine Point 8,781m3) plus airfield BFI 318m2.
b.
C. Base Support Tanker - 61,608m'.
d. Stocks. The minimum level to which stocks of AVTUR (F34) are normally allowed to fall in US Storage at Catherine Point is 6,050m3. The reserve level on the Base Support Tanker is 52,610m3.
Method of Fuel Replenishment. Delivery of fuel to the Island is by Ocean tanker which offloads into the Base Support Tanker (BST) permanently anchored off Georgetown. Fuel is pumped ashore from the BST via a US-owned floating ship-to-shore pipeline to the pierhead at Georgetown and thence by buried steel pipeline to the US storage depot at Catherine Point. The Ship-to-Shore pumping rate is limited to 120m3 per hour due to low working pressure on the floating pipeline. An above-ground steel pipeline connects the Catherine Point Tankage to the RAF BFI. Pumping rate to the airfield is a maximum of 300m3 per hour.
9.
Airfield Resources. Twelve hydrant refuelling points (5 doubles and 2 singles) are available on the parking apron and refuelling from each hydrant point is carried out through a Zwicky refuelling trolley. The hydrant system is capable of maintaining a flow rate of 2,000 Imp gallons (9.1m3) per minute and each Zwicky trolley is capable of passing 450 Imp gallons (2.0m3) per minute. In addition four 3,000 Imp gallon (13.6m3) bowsers and four 4,500 Imp gallon (20.14m3) trailers are available.
10.
Provision of Additional Resources. Additional bowsers would have to be positioned by H hour and could be provided as follows:
a.
From UK.
b.
(1) By Sea. In the worst case an LSL could be made available for loading five 3,000 Imp gallon refuellers within 72 hours. Passage time to Ascension at 15 knots is 10 days. Unloading may be delayed by Atlantic rollers which affect the pier particularly during the months of December to February.
(2) By Air. Five 3,000 gallon refuellers can be deployed by Hercules. The weight of one of these is 13.65 short tons and therefore Hercules lifting them to Ascension would have to stage at both Lajes and Dakar or Yundum. If diplomatic clearance for use of Dakar or Yundum cannot be obtained, authority must be sought for overweight take-offs from Lajes.
From US. Three to 4 days notice would be required by USAF to deploy an additional 12 refuellers of 5,000 US (4,000 Imp) gallon capacity and 4 to 5 days for augmentation personnel.
