89 to the end of Oct 89. The 2 aircraft selected for the
trial were XT 614 and XT 628. They would be subjected to a
pre and post trial survey in order to formally assess
whether any deterioration in their condition occurred during
the 6 months trial period. The aircraft were to be maintained in accordance with the SCOUT helicopter storage
Air Publication (AP); copies had already been forwarded to
HQ BFHK and to 660 Sqn AAC at Sek Kong by Comd Maint (Avn)
UK. The helicopters were to be maintained to the full issue
standard by the embodiment of modifications, STIS and all
other relevant instructions, as had been laid down by EME
9. The IRR airframes were not to be flown other than for
scheduled airtesting of the aircraft (which was required
once every 3 months) or on those occasions when the Scout
IRRS were generated under exercise conditions for the purposes of the trial.
27. The Secretary advised that it was planned to exercise
the no-notice generation of the 2 IRR SCOUTS on at least 3
occasions during the trial period. The generation procedure
was to be initiated by D Cts ROW (or by the CDS Duty Officer if outside normal UK working hours) following preliminary confirmation of practicality via telephone contact with ACOS
J3 HQ BFHK within the preceding one hour. There was to be
a total ban on "robbing" of spares from either of the 2 IRR
SCOUTS throughout the period of the trial, and the results
thereof were to be incorporated in the HQ BFHK helicopter
study; the maintenance aspects of the trial (already defined
by HQ REME (Avn) UK were to be forwarded to MODUK, Comd
Maint (Avn) UK, and to EME 9.
28. The Secretary explained that the principal aim of the
trial was to identify whether a SCOUT helicopter force level
comprising 6 UE operational aircraft and 2 IRR helicopters
would constitute a feasible Light Observation Helicopter
(LOH) force in Hong Kong from Oct 89 until such time as the
HQ BFHK helicopter study indicated that a further reduction
