Ke Zaishuo
Long-term
Ambassador, and Leader of the Chinese delegation. involvement in JLG work. Softly spoken and occasionally lapses into lengthy silence at social functions, but has a good grasp of politics and is respected by his staff. Can put on a show of indignation if dignity requires. Speaks some English but generally avoids doing so. One of his two sons has studied physics in England.
Zheng Weirong
Unlike the other permanent members, is from State Council rather than Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Expert on Basic Law. Born in
Hong Kong but left for China as a child. Still has relations in Hong Kong. Careful with words but can be lively at social functions. Speaks little English though can make some small talk.
Qiao Zonghuai
Son of a former Foreign Minister and retains good contacts in China. Because of his role in New China News Agency is better known in Hong Kong than his JLG colleagues. A bit of a hard-liner in private and suspicious of British "conspiracies", but affable enough at social gatherings. Speaks hardly any English.
Wang Jiaji
Career diplomat, spent a lengthy period in Finland after the Cultural Revolution. Careful and unimaginative though personally well-disposed. Principal interlocutor of the JLG office on routine business. English adequate for social purposes but not entirely comfortable.
Mme Zhang Youyun

Counsellor at Chinese Embassy in London, shortly due to leave.
