YE SHOUZENG (

吋寿曾

), COUNSELLOR

A quiet, reserved man with whom the Embassy has little contact. His

function in the HKMAO is not clear, but he is held in esteem by his

colleagues.

Speaks good English and roams widely in conversation.

Has previously

served in London (Third Secretary 1956) and the UN (1974-75). A former

member of the JLG.

YANG XIU (扬修

), COUNSELLOR

Appointed to the HKMAO fairly recently (?). Born Shaanxi 1933. As yet only 1 (social) contact with the Embassy. Responsible for "administrative" affairs on both the Hong Kong and Macao sides of the HKMAO, apparently fulfilling a "Head of Chancery"-type coordinating role. Served in Burma,

Argentina, UK (Counsellor) and Denmark. A quiet, pleasant manner. Halting English.

JIANG WEIPING (

蒋 * 24 A

), COUNSELLOR

Involved in Hong Kong related work at the MFA since 1983. Born Hebei 1925.

As yet only 1 contact with the Embassy (April 1989). Responsible for

Basic Law-related matters, in particular preparing speeches and reports. Quiet and withdrawn

very much the "backroom boy". Reasonable English.

), COUNSELLOR

HU CHUANZHONG (1

Joined HKMAO early 1989. Counsellor in charge of JLG-related work. Served as interpreter at Panmunjom, Korea 1974-80, and worked in Translation and Interpretation Department of MFA with Mme Zhang Youyun and Wang Weiyang. Also served in Canberra 1980-84 and Melbourne 1984-88.

His wife, who also speaks English and studied in Colchester, Essex in the early 70s, works in Education and Training Department, MFA.

Speaks good English and a little French. Visited UK twice (London and Manchester), in 1979 as interpreter for Hua Guofeng. Clearly enjoyed both visits and appreciated the good contacts he had with our High Commission in Canberra and Consulate-General in Melbourne.

A smart dresser in Western clothes, Hu is a little reserved, but never-

theless open and friendly in conversation. Has a nice sense of humour and

likes Western classical music and tennis.
