I wish to refer to my letter of 12 May 1989 concerning UNHCR's assistance in Hong Kong in 1989 for which total requirements are currently estimated at US$ 33.4 million. I wish to confirm that the cost of assistance related to emergency accommodation is included in the budgetary provision submitted with that letter, appealing for financial support of the donor community.
The caseload of 37,000 people mentioned in the latter is an average based on the present caseload and the current rates of arrival.
As far as the voluntary repatriation component of the UNHCR programme you enquired about is concerned, I enclose herein, copy of
UNHCR appeal for the Special Programme of assistance to returnees in Viet Nam which contains details of pre-departure and departure costs to be incurred in countries of first asylum in South East Asia in connection with repatriation to Viet Nam. As indicated in the appeal for Hong Kong, contributions for the voluntary repatriation component have already been secured.
