FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE: HONG KONG INQUIRY

1.

As you know, the Committee have confirmed that they will wish to take follow-up evidence from Mr Maude at 10.30 am on Wednesday 13 December. The Government's Interim Reply to the Committee's Report on Hong Kong will be published on

1 December and will form the basis of this session. I would expect the Clerk to provide, in confidence, advance notice of the proposed line of questioning. However, this may not arrive more than two or three working days beforehand, and should not delay the briefing.

2. You will wish to discuss with PS/Mr Maude the precise format required for the briefing and to consider which officials the Minister will wish to accompany him at this session. Mr Maude has already indicated that he would like a briefing session with officials on Tuesday 12 December and has set aside two hours for this purpose from 10.00 am that morning. He will need to go through the briefing material the previous weekend, and I would therefore be grateful if you would arrange for briefing to reach PS/Mr Maude for inclusion in the weekend box not later than 3.00 pm on Friday 8 December.
