UNHCR will

The two Governments and UNHCR agree that the success of the programme of return to the Lao People's Democratic Republic depends on public information in the camps about conditions in the LPDR, as well as on the provision of assistance to enable the Lao Government progressively to increase the monthly acceptance quotas. continue its efforts to promote voluntary repatriation further, notably through the dissemination of information in camps on the conditions of reintegration of returnees. In the LPDR, UNHCR will continue its assistance programme to facilitate the reintegration of returnees in their community. It is envisaged that the scope of the programme will be increased as the number of returnees rises.

New projects are under study, which aim at the reintegration and full self-sufficiency of returnees and would also benefit the surrounding community. This assistance will be implemented in districts and provinces where there are large concentrations of returnees and will include education, health and small agricultural schemes. In this respect, it may be noted that close consultations have been taking place between UNHCR and the Commission of the European Communities, which has indicated that it is willing to study new submissions aimed at enlarging the present programme for the benefit of Laotian returnees. Other areas of co-operation, particularly in terms of promotion of returns, have also been reviewed.
