Report of an Opinion Poll in August 1989

Introduction
A series of telephone surveys to monitor the trend of public opinion in respect of perceived problems in Hong Kong, the Government's overall performance and the
expectation of the general situation were started in
January 1983 by the former Home Affairs Branch. The
current survey, the twenty-third in the series, is the
tenth conducted by CNTA. This report presents the major findings of the current survey, together with some comparisons of the findings from previous surveys.

The survey was carried out by telephone interviews between 1800 2200 hours from 7 to 11 August 1989. It was based on a systematic random sample of residential telephone numbers contained in the current telephone directories. Within the household(s) of a selected telephone number, a respondent aged 15 to 64 was randomly selected for interview. The questionnaire is
shown at Annex I.

About 95% of households in Hong Kong have telephones. Those without telephones usually belong to the lower income group. It is likely that people in this group may be under-represented in the survey.
