All of these are related to each other and the project thus involves combined theoretical, experimental and field studies on the dynamic behaviour of typical offshore production platforms which will be constructed in the South China Sea as well as the environmental loads that they must sustain. In order that the maximum of benefit is to ensue it is hoped, in due course, to involve both the University of Hong Kong and the Royal Hong Kong Observatory in the project.
The Trustees were impressed not only by the timeliness and promise of the proposed research but also by its tripartite nature and the major involvement of CNOOC. Accordingly they agreed to offer the requested grant of HK$1,640,000 spread over a period of 31⁄2 years.
11. Technical Translation
Language difficulties give much trouble in communication and cooperation between Chinese-and English-speaking scientists and engineers. In endeavouring to lessen this the Chinese University of Hong Kong is expanding its present efforts in technical translation to the development of Master's degree courses in this subject. The University sought the assistance of the Foundation to enable it to get such degree courses under way and the Trustees agreed to offer the University a sum of HK$550,000 in order that it could obtain the services of an English expert in Chinese translation (Dr. John Minford) for a period of two years to help in the design and operation of suitable courses of study and the re- orientation of staff members of the new Translation Department now being established at the Chinese University.
12. Grants for Needy Students
Reports from the four Hong Kong institutions receiving grants from the Foundation for the assistance of needy students were received.; in each case the grant available to them for the academic year 1983-84 had been fully used up and the Trustees agreed to continue the practice of making grants for this purpose for a further year; to offset the effects of inflation the size of the grants was slightly increased so that the awards for the academic year 1984-85 were as follows:-
University of Hong Kong - HK$120,000
Chinese University of Hong Kong
HK$120,000
Hong Kong Polytechnic
HK$120,000
Hong Kong Baptist College
