have escaped your notice that possibly the context - the
envelope
-
in which you have chosen to put these remarks and the language of broken promises is not one that finds great favour with this Committee.
MR MARTIN LEE: May I have one last word, if I may?
CHAIRMAN:
You can have a last word, that seems fair.
MR MARTIN LEE: Thank you.
I would like honourable Members
to think whether Sir Geoffrey Howe's speech was understood by Members of Parliament to me, that the democracy he was
talking about, or the representative Government he was
talking about was one whereby the people of Hong Kong would rule Hong Kong, and not a public Government controlled by
Beijing, because, that to me is the crux of the matter.
CHAIRMAN:
Well, I think that raises broader issues, but
it is not the one that we were discussing at the end here, so
I think we must draw these conclusions to a close and thank
you for coming before us this morning.
HR MARTIN LEE: Thank you for your patience with me.
