КОРАВВ
LORD GLENARTHUR'S SPEECH TO ROYAL SOCIETY FOR ASIAN AFFAIRS,
2 FEBRUARY
We have of course a special interest in Hong Kong, and I would like
to take this opportunity to underline our commitment to the
territory. We and the Hong Kong Government are doing all we can
ensure that Hong Kong will continue its astonishing success story
well into the 1990s and beyond.
The Sino-British Joint Declaration
registered with the United Nations.
an international treaty
sets out detailed arrangements
for ensuring that Hong Kong can continue to prosper and flourish
after the territory reverts to China in 1997. The provisions of the
Joint Declaration will be reflected in the Basic Law, a form of
constitutional charter, which is currently being drafted by the
Chinese authorities. We shall take all necessary steps to ensure
that the Basic Law accurately reflects the provisions of the Joint
Declaration.
Hong Kong's geographical location and excellent communications make
it an ideal centre for business and trade in the Asia Pacific
region, and as a springboard into China. In this context we also see Hong Kong as an important location for British investment in a
wide range of businesses from services to manufacturing, and from
stores to major civil projects. We look forward to expanding our
commercial interests in all these areas in the future.
