SECRETARY OF STATE'S BREAKFAST MEETING WITH LORD YOUNG:

8 MARCH 1989

Points to make

(a) British trade and economic links with Hong Kong

Like you, keen to promote Anglo-Hong Kong economic links and to encourage British companies to take greater interest in Hong

Kong.

Right that we should support such initiatives as Algy Cluff's Anglo-Hong Kong Trust: pleased that you and Simon Glenarthur will be co-hosting inaugural dinner for Trust at Lancaster House on 21

March.

British exports to Hong Kong doing well (worth over £1 billion in 1988). Also significant that although British exports direct to China have stagnated (down 108), our exports to China via Hong Kong

show a substantial increase (up 30%).

Your idea of London-based Trade Commissioner worth pursuing.

Could play valuable role in efforts to promote awareness of

potential of Hong Kong as market in its own right, as gateway

China and as base for operations in region.

Important to ensure that London-based Commissioners fol. Complements that of Senior British Trade Commissioner in Hond

and does not undermine his position. Also need to ens

works in tandem with Hong Kong Trade Advisory Group.

Hope you will keep us fully in touch with your thin
