MR GORBACHEV'S VISIT TO THE UK 5-7 April
1. Please refer to Soviet Department's call for briefs (attached). They are asking for contributions by 16 March. I spoke to George Edgar (Soviet Dept) about what was needed for agenda item 16. He told me he would cover in item 2, the philosophical aspects of Soviet foreign policy as it affects the Asia/Pacific region ( Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok, Shevardnadze's speech at UN last September). We need concern ourselves only with specific Asian issues Soviet/Japanese relations, Sino/Soviet rapprochement, perhaps Korea and Shevardnadze's visit to East Asia in December, if SEAD agree, plus any other topical items Departments consider important enough to raise ( Soviet troop withdrawals from Mongolia?)

If you and other Departments are content that I should do so, I will co-ordinate the Asia/Pacific briefs. Contributions (Points to Make and Background), by 14 March please.
