(d) War Widows
War widows do not automatically qualify under present Immigration Rules. But Home Office Ministers have indicated that they are sympathetic to this praticular group. There are only around 30 or so people in this category.
(e) Spouses of British citizens
Citizenship cannot be granted without some period of residence in this country. But there is no problem for spouses of British citizens to enter this country with their partners.
(f) Non-Chinese ethnic minorities
I gave a public assurance in 1986 that should any individual in this group come under pressure to leave Hong Kong in the future, we would consider it an obligation upon any future government to treat such a case with particular sympathy. We have no intention of backtracking on that assurance.
Special provision has also been made for the non-Chinese ethnic minorities to retain British nationality as British Overseas Citizens for two generations beyond 1997 if they would otherwise be
stateless.
