Mr Martin Lee has asked for a meeting with the Secretary of State and Mr Maude in the week beginning 11 September but preferably on 11 or 12 September (Hong Kong telnos 2892 and 2907).

I recommend that Mr Maude should offer to see Mr Lee on 14 or 15
September, if necessary, in his constituency.
Background
3. Mr Martin Lee has asked for the Hong Kong Government's
assistance in arranging a meeting with the Secretary of State and Mr
Maude on 11-12 September, although he has indicated that he could
prolong his stay until the end of the week beginning 11 September if
appointments can be made. Mr Lee would like to have a general
discussion on the situation in Hong Kong following the events of
early June. He is visiting the UK to attend the SLD Conference in
Brighton on 10 September.
4. Mr Lee QC (CV attached) is a member of the Legislative Council and one of Hong Kong's most prominent independent political figures. He is closely involved in a number of political groupings in Hong
