Sir James Spicer is calling on Mr Maude at 4 pm for a general briefing prior to his visit to the Far East. He has not indicated a wish to raise any particular topic. I submit a background brief on Hong Kong and a brief on Taiwan prepared by FED. Mr McCleary (FED) and I will both attend the meeting.
2. Sir James is visiting Hong Kong mainly on Conservatives Abroad business. He will then travel to Taiwan at the invitation of the Kuomintang before attending a meeting of the International Democratic Union in Tokyo on 22 September.
