Dear Foreign Secretary,
In January 1990 the World Service of the BBC will be audible for the first time in Hong Kong, twenty-four hours a day on a medium wave frequency. To celebrate this event we should very much like to broadcast a 'live', one-hour "Phone-In" with you as our guest. The programme would be presented by our Diplomatic Correspondent Mark Brayne who, as you know, has a wide knowledge of the region. Although we would hope that you would answer questions from all over the world on a wide range of foreign affairs topics, the programme would for obvious reasons have a special emphasis on the Far East.
In order to maximise our audience we propose that the Phone-In takes place in Bush House on Sunday January 7th at 1300 GMT - 1400 GMT. This would ensure a large audience, as follows.
2100 in Hong Kong
Evening in the Far East generally.
1800-1900 in the Indian sub-continent
1300-1600 in Europe (Western and Eastern)
1400-1600 in most of Africa
0800 Eastern coast of the United States
0900 in the Caribean
1000 in large parts of Latin America.
I very much hope that you will be able to take part in what I am sure would be a fascinating hour of discussion between yourself and a worldwide audience. However, should you feel unable to accept, may I ask you to consider an interview to be conducted by Mark Brayne? Clearly this would be less satisfactory, but it would nevertheless ensure that the introduction of 24 hour medium wave frequency in Hong Kong does not go unmarked.
Yours faithfully
Muutair
