Thank you for your letter of 23 June about Hong Kong.
I was very interested to read your views about the current
situation.
I am grateful to you for seeking to dispel the illusion
in Hong Kong that it would be possible for any British
Government to grant right of abode to all British nationals
in Hong Kong. I also note with interest what you say
about the likely effect or absence of it of such a
move on immigration from Hong Kong. The Government are
nevertheless looking urgently at what scope there is in
our immigration policy, primarily with the aim of giving
Hong Kong people the confidence to remain in the territory.
I should very much like to have the opportunity to
meet representatives of Conservatives Abroad on my forth-
coming visit. But my programme on this occasion is
impossibly tight. I was glad to see you on my visit last
year, and hope to be able to see you on a subsequent visit. Please pass my apologies to your colleagues.
