Visit by OMELCO Delegation, 20-24 November
The Governor of Hong Kong has informed us that a delegation from OMELCO, (the Office of Members of the Executive and Legislative Councils of Hong Kong) will be visiting London from 20-24 November (to coincide with the Foreign Affairs debate). The main purpose of the visit will be to lobby on the Hong Kong nationality issue.
The Foreign Secretary and Mr Maude have agreed to see the delegation. The delegation leader, Mr Allen Lee Peng-Fei CBE, the Senior Member of the Legislative Council (and also a Member of the Executive Council), and two other members of the delegation (Martin Barrow, a Director of Jardine Matheson, and Jimmy McGregor, former Director of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce) have also asked to call on Lord Trefgarne to discuss the effects of confidence in Hong Kong on trade and industry.
We hope that Lord Trefgarne can find time to see the delegation. OMELCO evidently attach importance to meeting the Minister of Trade. The confidence issue is of course a particularly pressing one in Hong Kong and it would be helpful if the Lord Trefgarne could indicate a readiness to listen to OMELCO's views on the subject. This would be much appreciated by OMELCO and would create a favourable impression in Hong Kong.
