Work on the expansion of the port will go on in
parallel with work on the airport. A breakwater will be
built between two of our islands to double the sheltered
area of the natural harbour. New container terminals and
multi-purpose cargo terminals will be built near the
Kowloon peninsula and on the northeast coast of Lantau.
These will be capable of handling all the projected growth
in ocean-going, coastal and river traffic.
It is a huge project, even by Hong Kong standards.
And we have carried through some massive developments over
the last fifteen years. At current prices, it is worth more
than US$16 billion.
There is more to come. Once the replacement
airport opens in 1997. Kowloon Bay, around the old airport,
can be reclaimed and the whole of that section of the city
replanned. Height restrictions, which have impeded
development, in that part of the city under the flight path
can also be lifted. The redevelopment of this and other
parts of the city will keep our planners, our architects,
our construction engineers and contractors busy well into
the 21st century. True to our open economic policies, the
rest of the world and its architects and engineers and
constructors are welcome to join in.
