Speech by the Governor
at a luncheon hosted by the World Affairs Council
in Los Angeles, 19 October 1989.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Our cities have much in common. We both have our
backs to a mighty continent and we both face out across the
Pacific: you towards the East; we towards the West. We
both have ports and thriving financial centres. We are both
extrovert movie towns: yourselves undisputed capital of the
industry; we the centre of a unique Cantonese culture, now
spreading beyond South-east Asia to the Chinese communities
of North America.
This is not my first visit to the dynamic city of
Los Angeles. But it is my first visit to the eastern rim
of the Pacific Basin since becoming Governor of Hong Kong.
I am grateful for the opportunity you have given me to talk
about Hong Kong in this tumultuous year. The economic links
and the personal ties between the peoples of the Pacific
rim grow stronger every day. It is right that we should
share perspectives on common successes and current
problems.
