Hong Kong and the United States
have the same values. We both believe in free
enterprise; in free speech; in the freedom of the
human spirit; and in hard work getting its just
reward. We speak with the same voice on many issues.
Where there has been friction in our relationship it
has tended to be the healthy friction of business
competition.
We have taken some hard knocks this year. They
are not the first; nor will they be the last. We have
overcome worse and emerged the stronger for it. So
it has been this year. We are busy now in
strengthening our social, legal and political
institutions. We are trying to build a long term
relationship with China genuinely beneficial to both
sides. And we are building with determination and
speed for the new opportunities which we know are
there in our future. We look forward to sharing the
building and the benefits with you.
