1. I paid my fourth visit to Hong Kong on 7-11 January; and my second visit to Thailand on 11-13 January. I had the invaluable support of Robin McLaren throughout the trip, and that of Alan Paul (as Head of HKD-designate) for the Hong Kong leg.

The arrival head-lines appeared to say it all: Glenarthur arrives for difficult time on boat people. know, Hong Kong thrives on having one particularly thorny problem with which to confront Ministerial visitors, and this time it was clearly billed as the boat people. Nonetheless, I had the impression that the level of heat in the boat people issue was due in part to the fact that other things were going well. The economy is booming: I saw for myself some of the exciting development projects, including the breath-taking new Convention Centre due to be opened formally in November.
