We are following with great interest the debate in Hong Kong on the "mainstream formula" put forward in BLDC. Attach importance to a consensus emerging on this important area of Hong Kong's future.
Call on all those concerned to find ways of reconciling their differences. Must find approach which can command general support,
maintain stability and prosperity.
Does HMG support idea of referendum on political structure?
Hong Kong has just had 5 months of extensive public consultation. The debate is continuing. See no reason to hold a referendum at this stage, given that people have such extensive channels through which to express their opinions.
But if Basic Law provides for referendum in future, (as in "mainstream formula"), that is a matter for them.
