In response to UNHCR's recent appeal, HMG is pledging 125,000 US dollars that's about 1 million HK dollars towards the budget
for UNHCR'S repatriation programme which is due to start shortly. understand that the Hong Kong Government propose to make a
comparable contribution.
Training, particularly language training, is a key element in the ability of refugees to adapt to their new lives in the West after they have been resettled. With this in mind, I am pleased to announce a donation of English language training equipement worth £2,500 for the use of refugees awaiting resettlement.
These are concrete practical measures which I trust will leave people in Hong Kong in doubt about the priority which the British Government attachs to this serious problem.

I
Another theme of my visit has been education. I have been most encouraged to learn of the rapid progress which is being made in the planning and construction of the new Universty of Science and Technology. Education is a key to Hong Kong's continuing prosperity and it is an area to which I and the Hong Kong Government attach a high priority. It was with this in mind that I announced earlier in my visit a donation by the British Government of two Acorn Archimedes computers to the new University. They will help the University to meet its growing administrative and publicity needs, while at the same time underlining the valuable role which British high technology can play in Hong Kong's continuing development.

As always, a key objective of my visit has been to foster closer personal contacts with Hong Kong people. It was with this objective in mind that I announced to OMELCO yesterday that the British Government plans to invite a group of Legislative Councillors to London in the near future. I look forward to receiving them there. I hope it will be the first in a series of
such visits.
