break away from the "one country" theme of thought in considering the
immediate situation. Arrangements should be made for Hong Kong's
political system from a long-term angle.
The China factor is double-faceted; there is a positive side
and a negative one.
The people of Hong Kong should strive to preserve the positive
side while playing down the negative.
In playing down the impact
of the negative side, caution should be execised to avoid blind
impulsiveness in doing something which is ineffective and unrealistic;
or which could result in instability in Hong Kong. Instead, there should
be a gradual progress which is advantageous, reasonable an well-paced. The impact of the student movement is long lasting. China's future will definitely be better and one should not be pessimistic about the future
of Hong Kong. Hong Kong should maintain its continued prosperity and
hence its usefulness to China. If Hong Kong is messed up, it will hurt the people of Hong Kong as well as the situation in China.
The Course To Be Adopted By the People of
Hong Kong In Supporting Democracy
There is indeed no need for the people of Hong Kong to get
involved in the power struggle in the upper echelon of the Chinese
leadership. They will only have to remain firm in their patriotic
and democratic stance to help promote the progress of democracy in China.
To matter who holds the reins of leadership in China, it is impossible for him to act against the common aspiration of the Chinese masses, nor
is it possible for him to act against the common aspiration of the Hong
Kong people. The leadership will surely adopt policies which will appease
popular feelings. Irrespective of the motive of such appeasement, the people of Hong Kong should take advantage of all favourable conditions to compel those in power to make concessions and strive to steer the direction of development to be in line with the wishes and interest of the Chinese people.
Its course is:
1.
That the Chinese leadership recognises the Beijing students
movement as a patriotic pro-democracy movement.
