6. Cooperation in the Pacific region.

Support regional cooperation, but oppose a fragmentation of the multilateral economic system by the formation of a Pacific

free trade zone. Undertake to open Pacific markets further in

return for better access to the European internal market after

1992.

The Pacific Basin is the region which is least integrated com-

pared with the other world economic centers of the triad. This

is mainly due to the catching-up process of the region and the

closed Japanese market for manufactures. Regional cooperative

efforts deserve special support, just as Europe supports the

regional cooperation within ASEAN.
