Hong Kong people always prepare to contribute to the modernization of China. However, we also dread communist rule after 1997 when Britain return the place to China. Each year 50,000 professional and business people emigrated abroad to seek refuge in more democratic countries. The number of people emigrating is going to spiral in the coming years because the June massacre has completely shattered the faith of people in Hong Kong in the present communist leadership. All the people in Hong Kong, including expatriates from Britain, America and other countries, strongly feel that Britain should give the right of abode to the Hong Kong Chinese to fulfill its constitutional and moral responsibility. As a prominent world leader, Britain should have the courage to accept this reality. Britain cannot simply hand over 5.5 million people to a core of communist leaders who do not respect human rights and ignore the law when their own interest is at stake. The Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provides for self-automony in Hong Kong, can easily be ignored by the Chinese authority after 1997. If Britain continues its hard stand, most of the professionals and business people, together with their money will go. Hong Kong will then suffer serious set-back and its value to China, and to most of the world will be destroyed. On the other hand, if Britain. fulfill its moral and constitutional obligations and gives the right of abode to Hong Kong people, most professionals will not go and make Hong Kong a better place to live. The Chinese authority will also be less likely to suppress Hong Kong people and there would be a much higher chance that the terms in the Joint Declaration could be observed Now all the free world condemned Chinese authority's brutal action and have sympathy for the people of Hong Kong. Those countries includes America, Canada, France, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and other EC countries. If Britain takes the lead, all other countries will support and even in the unlikely event that the situation in Hong Kong becomes unbearable and all the people have to leave, Britain will be taking only a portion of the whole population. It is an honorable cause for Britain to take.
If you can help us to convince your people in this respect, we would never forget your kind efforts. One way to do this is to bring the awareness of the whole British population to the recent events which happened in Hong Rong and China. We will send you, and in fact all the universities in Britain, relevant abstracts from local newspapers. Would you please make copies and distribute to as many British citizens as possible. do this on a regular basis for at least some months.
