I am writing on behalf of the 750,000 members of this trade union, all of whom work in the British public service, to express our outrage at the massacre of several thousand innocent civilians on 4 June by the People's Liberation Army. We are appalled by the army's indiscriminate and brutal use of force against unarmed citizens and deplore your government's decision to use the army in this way against people who were merely engaging in a peaceful demonstration in support of political reform.
We call for an immediate end to this senseless killing and bloodshed and urge your government to respond to the wishes of the Chinese people by introducing genuine democratic reform, including free elections, freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
We also express the hope that, when the territory of Hong Kong is handed over to China in 1997, it will be on the basis of a firm system of democratic government and that your government will fully respect the human rights of the citizens of Hong Kong.
