Australia
Prime Minister deplored use of violence on 5 June. Foreign Minister summoned Chinese Ambassador to express shock and concern. "Profound dismay" in public and Government circles.
Action:
Prime Minister's visit to China in October cancelled.
Forthcoming visit to Australia by Chinese trade delegation
cancelled.
Scheduled visit by HMAS Parramatta to Shanghai cancelled. State Governments also cancelled planned visits to and from
China.
All Chinese students in Australia (c 8,000) given automatic
extension to their visas at least till end July.
Non-essential Embassy staff and dependents evacuated on 6 June. Trade sanctions not imposed but not ruled out.
Pressure for Government to liberalise further the policy on Hong Kong immigration, but no evidence that they are considering this.
