SUBJECT:

Thank you for your letter of 6 June.

The British Government fully share your sense

of shock and outrage at the brutal treatment

of unarmed demonstrators and the indiscriminate

use of military force.

We were very concerned about the case of

Mr L

The British Embassy in Peking

pressed the Chinese authorities hard on his

behalf and kept in close touch with him during

the period of his detention. We were all

pleased when he was able to return safely to Hong Kong on 8 June.

You may be assured that the British Embassy

in Peking and our Consulate-General in Shanghai

will continue to do all they can to help

Hong Kong residents who encounter difficulties

in China. We are very conscious of the concerns

in Hong Kong about such cases and we attach

a very high priority to resolving them.
