It was good of you to draw my attention to the

allegations about the treatment of Hong Kong residents by

our Embassy in Peking. I had seen similar comments in

the Hong Kong press. We have looked carefully into these

allegations and I am satisfied that they are completely

unfounded. Our Embassy helped in the evacuation of

hundreds, if not thousands, of Hong Kong people in the

immediate aftermath of the 3/4 June. Hong Kong British

nationals received exactly the same help and advice as

any other British national. There was no question of any

discrimination against Hong Kong people.

Where there were particular grounds for concern, such as

in the case of Mr Lee Cheuk-Yan, who was detained in
