STATEMENT ON DEVELOPMENTS IN CHINA
We have been following developments in China with the closest
possible attention. We have called on all concerned to show
moderation and restraint and hope that the situation can be resolved
peacefully.
It is understandable that people in Hong Kong should feel great concern about events in China. We understand the importance they attach to the freedoms which they currently enjoy.
This emphasises the importance of the Joint Declaration, which
guarantees these freedoms for Hong Kong after 1997. The Government are determined to ensure that the Agreement is fully and faithfully implemented. It remains very much in China's long term interest to make the Agreement work and to see Hong Kong remaining stable and
prosperous.
