15. WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR PARTICULAR GROUPS OF PEOPLE?

(a) War Widows?

Such people do not automatically qualify under present Immigration Rules. But Home Secretary certainly does

not rule out flexibility in this area.

(b) Spouses of British citizens?

Citizenship cannot be granted without some period of

residence in this country.

But there is no problem for spouses of British citizens

to enter this country with their partners.

(c) Students?

To make special changes for Hong Kong students only

would be unfair to other students, including other

British nationals studying here (ie BOCs of Malaysian

origin).

But applications for citizenship from those who have been here for long period (over 10 years) are considered

sympathetically.

Young professionals/entrepreneurs?

Professional people may come to this country to work provided they can obtain a work permit. Their prospective employer can apply for this on their

behalf.
